My latest for CJR: what's next for CNN

Trying to determine what's next for a news organization is tricky because it really requires a crystal ball to know what the news cycle will be, but that was my task for CJR. My first job out of college was a financial advisor for Morgan Stanley (yes, I escaped). In that job, we were required to repeat the disclaimer "past performance is no guarantee of future results" before selling any stock or mutual fund. When thinking about future results by CNN, past performance is no guarantee. I don't think market forces have changed significantly, so it's hard not to anticipate how their producers will follow a dictated storyline in the future. Nonetheless, we can always hope for change and that independent-minds will prevail in the new CNN control rooms now located at Hudson Yards.

Journalism is not a toy to be played with and put on a shelf to be pulled out when one decides to be real or factual. It used to be or at least should be a powerful source of truth and fact. CNN and MSNBC…

I have this belief that somewhere in the upper echelons of Media (TV, Print) there are powers that be that control the content and direction of their "content". Even so-called 'Liberal" networks like MSNBC, I see direct support and enabling for trump. Yes, the home of Lawrence O'Donnell and Rachel Maddow behind the hoopla, support trump. Here's why I say that. I was sick one day and stayed in bed all day with MSNBC on. On every show, they showed at least 6-10 clips of trump every hour. trump, trump, trump, all day long. trump, trump, trump. That is propagandizing and a form of imprinting that monster on us. All-day long, trump. trump, trump. They forced trump down our throats.…
